First MOD Engine

I suspect it was for a demo which is why this question it is here but what was the first MOD engine, when was it made and by whom, etc.

If you mean a MOD replay routine I would think it would have been in The Amiga Demo by TEX (March 1988):

Noisetracker ST 1.0 was 1990 but I can't find an exact release date:

I remember the NoiseTracker Replay Routine 1.5 which was good.

Was the Amiga demo a proper replayer for Karsten's MOD files or a hack by Mad Max to play 4 channel digi tunes?

I always thought that the ST Knights were the first to do a proper .MOD file replayer?

That's is a good question! A quick memory dump from Steem Debugger shows no sign of the M.K. header. I thought he might have separated the song data and samples and kept one copy of each sample in memory (to save memory) because I'm sure some of the modules share the same samples, but it seems he has done it another way.

Maybe he wrote a MOD to Mad Max digi format convertor? It might be basically the same player as the Digital Department tunes in The Big Demo and the SoundMon screen in the Union Demo perhaps?

We all know JH was more than a wiz with music as he coded a lot of music players on the ST & Amiga. Turrican 8 channels on the Amiga was only possible for Chris Huelsbeck because JH helped him out.

I remember an Amiga-owning mate at the time being impressed but also taking the mick because the first tracker tool (it might have been the one above) couldn't handle some of his own tunes that he'd made. Obviously things progressed and more and more of the Soundtracker effects were handled / recognised. He hated Quartet on either machine with a passion and could use the Soundtracker notation to generate more of his kind of tunes.

Noisetracker was the first proper tracker I seen and used and a great thing to mess around with my mastersound samples with. Other than that I also used the amazing Quartet, not so much a tracker I guess though..

The info on DHS seems to reckon Sound Machine was an earlier digital tracker. I think some early games used custom multi-channel sequencers too but thats Grazey's department. It does make you wonder about which other internal music tools used by composers have never came to our attention (probably made on another machine and just played on ST) I am rambling..

Ah yes, SoundMachine. That brings back memories. I think I last saw it back in 1988/1989 but was impressed with what it was doing :)
