Steem - Can I use a USB floppy drive?

Post by ArnoldXs »

Hello. As a new user of Steem, I have a question that is probably basic...
Can Steem work with a USB floppy drive and read files from disks, instead of .st images?
Reason is: I have some personal files on a floppy. I created them decades ago and no longer have an Atari ST. I only have the floppy disk. I run on W10 without internal floopy drive, only USB. I have been trying to create a .st from this floppy but no success...I tested several utilities such as ST Recover but I did not manage to read the floppy disk and create the .st.
So as a last solution, I was trying to use Steem and read these files directly from my USB floppy drive
Thanks

It probably won't work.

Can your PC read the files via Windows when it's connected to the USB? If so, maybe copy them direct to Windows, then use STEEM to put them back into a .ST disk image file.

Other than the above, you need to find someone local to you with an older Windows XP (or 98) PC which has a built-in floppy drive to read the disk in.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Ideally, you need to get a proper flux level disk dumper, and a cheap PC/ST/Amiga floppy drive.

It'll connect up to your PC/MAC via USB, make a perfect copy of the disk, and then, you can use that with an emulator, or extract the files from it, etc.

A Greaseweazle should cost about a fiver, and about the same for a cheap secondhand PC drive.

Do you know where I can get a Greaseweazle for a fiver from? The cheapest I can find one is around £30. Also, there seems to be a few versions available, what's the best one to get? Sorry for all the questions, I'm coming back to Atari scene after a 15 year absence.

You can get them from Greaseweazle's author.
https://github.com/keirf/Greaseweazle/discussions/66
If you can solder it's £6 or £10 full assembled plus postage.
The more expensive models support using 2 drives attached as A + B on a floppy cable plus buffers for using 5.25" and 8" drives without damaging the chip.

Thanks a lot for the information on the Greaseweazle.
Once I have it, can I use a PC floppy drive or should I absolutely use an Atari floppy drive?
As a reminder, my goal is to read Atari floppies

Before you shell out cash, some USB floppy drives don't work on Windows 10 (you didn't say what your difficulty was with the drive you have). Do you have a friend with a Windows 7 computer that you try it on?

I've just got one and posted my experience here:

I've ordered the one direct from FLOPPYDISK.COM and will see if it works exactly the same way.
https://www.floppydisk.com/drives

I don't yet know why some disks read and some don't. You can also format disks to 720K on the PC using the Command Line.

This video was lots of help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuXMcWUPO2g

Here's the link to the one I'm testing here:
