EmuTOS 1.2 has been released

Post by czietz »

With great pleasure the EmuTOS developers can announce the release of EmuTOS 1.2, aggregating one year of productive work since the last release.

As always, you can download the release from our SourceForge page:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/emutos ... mutos/1.2/

Changes since 1.1.1:

Major changes:
- AES: Add support for 3D objects (enabled in 512k ROMs and PRG)
- AES: Add support for new menu_xxx() functions in AES 3.30
- AES: Allow up to 16 windows for versions with AES 3.30 support
- BIOS: Add interrupt-driven I/O for SCC serial ports
- EmuDesk: Resize screen memory in videl modes, just like TOS4
- General: Make FireBee ROMs single-language
- VDI: Fix crash under FreeMiNT with memory protect enabled

Other changes:
- AES: Display better error message if program launch failed
- AES: Improve error checking for wind_xxx() functions
- AES: Better looking separators in menus
- BDOS: Implement undocumented TOS function Srealloc()
- BIOS: Add support for IKBD/MIDI error vectors
- BIOS: Increase timeout for IDE transfers
- EmuDesk: Fix bug in 'Set file mask...'
- EmuDesk: Fix drag'n'drop bug with desktop icons
- EmuDesk: Display the 'busy' mouse cursor for some lengthy actions
- VDI: Allow Falcon video modes to be set in v_opnwk()
- VDI: Implement v_hardcopy()
- VDI: Speed up some VDI calls
- XBIOS: Implement undocumented TOS function VcheckMode()
- Many minor and/or obscure bugs have been fixed

I have a Milan so I don't use EmuTOS so I hadn't thought about this before.

EmuTOS includes an AES. How does it compare to other AES like Xaaes and Myaes ?

EmuTOS's AES strives to be compatible to that of Atari TOS, up to the Falcon, i.e. Atari TOS 4. We've made huge progress in that regard with the current release, which adds some Falcon-AES features (3D objects, menu functions, ...). However, we're not including advanced features of "multitasking-oriented AES" (for the lack of a better term) like XaAES or MyAES.

Then again, looking at the binary sizes: XaAES is about 500k, MyAES about 250k-400k. The entire EmuTOS operating system (not just its AES) needs to fit into ROMs that are, e.g., 256k in total.

Or in other words: EmuTOS is designed to be a replacement for Atari TOS; not for MiNT + XaAES/MyAES.

Thanks. I can see there is a lot work in EmuTOS and there was always the possibility of it being better in some areas than the other AESs

Also included (but not in the change list) are dialog titles in the 512/1024KB ROMs. This is an AES feature of MagiC and XaAES - underlined text in a dialog box.
